The article is devoted to two models of community that can be discerned in J.-L. Nancy’s books «The Inoperative Community» and «The Sense of the World». The first model rests upon heideggerian ontology and reduces community to ontological event. The second one is based on the experience of speech and the appeal of the other. The incompatibility of these models is demonstrated and their ethical grounds are examined
