The first type of argument, which is found in early Greek philosophy is polarity, where objects are classified as belonging to opposite principles, historically associated with both the foundation of human thought and the structure of archaic societies. Polarity was the feature of the pre-philosophy, and played a major role in the descriptions of the world in mythological thought. The first philosophers used polarity both as a structure of the universe, a methodological basis for philosophical speculations and a principle of argumentation. So, the problem of contrary and contradictory statements explicitly posed by Aristotle could already be found in the doctrine of opposites of Heraclitus, and, in contrast to popular opinion, the latter philosopher does not violate the law of contradiction, and therefore his arguments in these cases are correct. The author also discusses the dichotomy principle used by Parmenides and Zeno as part of demonstrative argument in the indirect proof (using the reduction to absurdity and demonstrations of an infinite regress). Invention and use of the indirect proof are attributed to the Eleatics as well.
